Have you ever been in the band room before rehearsal starts and there’s a marvelous cacophony of dozens of musicians warming up and noodling all at the same time? Or have you been in a drum circle where one or two of the drummers are pursuing their own groove and are out of step with the group. Communal music making and improvisation can be a unifying experience when we let go of our ego, our preconceived notions, and listen. Right now, our world is in discord. I am trying to listen.

Communities are struggling. Struggling with senseless killings. Struggling with justice. Struggling with the impact of a deadly virus. And the voices cry. I hear you. I am trying to listen. I am trying to understand. And I will continue to hope for harmony.
