DIY Flannel Board

I love using flannel boards with my toddler classes. It’s a great visual element. In small groups or individual sessions, children can help me put the pieces on the board. For counting rhymes it works well to have a tactile visual representation of the numbers.

However, when I was starting to use these, commercial flannel boards were pretty expensive and some of the DIY tutorials I saw online didn’t meet my needs or the materials weren’t available. I needed something that was small enough to fit in my basket and easy and inexpensive to make.

I found these clipboards at the dollar store. The size was ideal.

In addition, I can use the clip at top or binder clips if I have non-flannel visual aids.

I used some craft glue to attach some left-over flannel. I would have preferred a solid color but this is what I had.

The flannel sheets were 33 cents at the craft store.

Some of the shapes I cut out free hand, others I used a stencil for.

It probably cost me less than $5 to make. It’s fairly small so it works better in smaller groups. The felt pieces are pretty small as well so need careful supervision. However, this is a great solution for a traveling music therapist or teacher!
